A marketplace for turning real assets into NFTs

A marketplace where owners enrol assets as NFTs and collectors trade them — minting, listing, transfer and settlement in one place, with the ownership record living on chain rather than in a database we control.

Background

The client

A marketplace where owners enrol real assets as NFTs and collectors trade them. Minting, listing, transfer and settlement in one place, with the ownership record living on chain rather than in a database the platform controls.

Where it started

The challenge

A marketplace has two jobs that pull against each other.

Minting has to be simple enough for an owner who has never touched a wallet — someone who has an asset worth enrolling and no interest in learning about gas, signatures or key custody. If enrolment is intimidating, nothing gets listed and there is no marketplace.

Trading has to be trustworthy enough for a buyer spending real money on a token whose entire value rests on the record being correct. Settlement that is occasionally wrong is worse than no marketplace at all, because the loss is permanent and public.

Approach

What we built

We built enrolment so an owner can bring an asset in and have it minted without needing to understand the chain underneath. The wallet work happens in the background; what the owner sees is the asset and its listing.

On the trading side, listings, transfers and settlement are verifiable independently of us. Ownership and provenance stay on chain, which means the record survives the platform — if the marketplace disappeared tomorrow, holders would still own what they own and could prove it. That property is the entire argument for doing this on chain rather than in a database.

Result

The outcome

The marketplace has passed a thousand users and around USD 80,000 in trades, with assets enrolled as NFTs and traded on a working secondary market.

Minting has to be simple and settlement has to be exact — two goals that pull apart. Read more about how we approach blockchain and Web3 development, or see the rest of our work.
